Why Set-Up Boxes | Set-Up Box Manufacturing | Set-up Box Terminology

    An Introduction

In preparation for the manufacture of rigid paper boxes the following basic steps should be applied:

    Know the size
Rigid paper box measurements are based on inside dimensions, from score line to score line. Size is given in inches, and tolerances can be held to 64ths of an inch. In measuring the size box desired, give dimensions in the following order: length x width x height. Base measurements control the dimensions of the lid, but be sure to state the type of cover-- full telescope, partial telescope, hinged, etc.

    Know the materials
The essential parts of a box are paperboard, paper, and glue. The weight and grade of paperboard used in the manufacture of rigid boxes depends upon: a -size; b -weight of article to be packaged; c -appearance. The choice of board also determines the strength and rigidity of the box. Consequently, great care should be taken in specifying board stock... in determining the weight and finish. There are many grades of boxboard, and the choice will be determined by the intended use and desired appearance.

    Know the basic manufacturing procedure
    a. The paperboard is cut and scored to specified box size. Often there are several blanks scored at the same time from one long sheet.
    (figure 1)

    b. Next the scored sheet is broken into individual box blanks, and the corners forming the sides are cut out.
    (figures 2, 3)

    c. These cornered blanks are bent to right angles and stay tape is applied at each of the four corners. Thus the box is formed.
    (figure 4)

    d. The same process is repeated for the cover, which, of course, is slightly larger than the base in length and width.
    (figure 5)

    e. A covering or overwrap of paper (literally thousands of grades and
designs to select from), cloth, leather, or other forms of coverings may
be applied by tight wrapping or simulated loose wrapping to decorate and complete
    the package.

Burt Rigid paper boxes can be purchased and custom packed to your requirements; however, our boxes are normally sold closed and packed in corrugated shipping cartons.
